Calvert Hall freshman nails half-court basketball shot to win $1000 in school’s annual Magazine Drive

Freshman Alex Murphy hit a half-court basketball shot in front of the school community in the Alumni Memorial Gymnasium on Thursday, October 8th to win a $1000 prize in the school’s annual Magazine Drive. Alex’s name was randomly selected and he had made at least five sales in the drive to be eligible for the shot. He had a choice of a lay-up ($100), free throw ($250), three-pointer ($500) and half-court shot ($1000) and chose the half-court shot after encouragement from the student body. A VIDEO and photos of the winning basket are available at www.calverthall.com/magazinedrive.

The Magazine Drive, which is in its 29th year, is the students’ major fundraiser and helps to cover financial commitments to construction and renovation projects. During the history of the drive, Calvert Hall students have raised almost $1 million for the school. This year, they raised $70,000.

Alex, who attended grade school at Mt. Airy Christian Academy, travels 90 miles roundtrip from Monrovia, MD to Calvert Hall each day. He is currently a member of the JV Football team.
