Catholic Educational Assoc. of PA Annual Meeting

The Catholic Educational Association of Pennsylvania will hold its annual meeting at Central Catholic HS (Pittsburgh) in April. Rev. Paul Campbell, superintendent of schools in the Pittsburgh Diocese, is president of the association, and Bishop Hugh Boyle will serve as host to the delegates.

St. Francis (Eddington) Basketball Coach Meehan

The basketball team of St. Francis Industrial School (later, Vocational School) in Eddington, PA, this past season was coached by Joe Meehan, a member of the La Salle College Explorer Varsity basketball team.

Monsignor Joseph A. Farrell

Rev. Joseph A. Farrell (Manhattan College, Class of 1895) was elevated to the title of Monsignor recently. Because of Monsignor Farrell’s long-standing promotion of Catholic education on Staten Island, Manhattan had given him an Honorary Degree in 1932.

Brooklyn Auxiliary Bishop Kearney

Bishop Raymond Kearney is the new Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn; he was consecrated to this position in February 1935.

Monsignor John Chidwick Passes

The Bulletin of St. La Salle Auxiliary devotes an entire page and a part of another page to the late Monsignor John Chidwick, who was taught by the Christian Brothers at St. Gabriel’s Parish and graduated from Manhattan College in 1883. His posts include Chaplain of the U.S. Navy, President of St. Joseph’s Seminary, and President of the College of New Rochelle. A grateful Manhattan College bestowed an Honorary Degree on Msgr. Chidwick in 1912, and the Institute made him an Affiliated Member.

Bronx Wins Spelling Trophy

Sacred Heart Parochial School (The Bronx) won the coveted trophy for the annual written competition in spelling, conducted in the Lasallian parochial schools in New York City and its suburbs and awarded by De La Salle Institute. St. Jerome’s School (The Bronx) and St. Patrick’s School (Newburgh, NY) finished second and third, respectively.

Holy Name Parade at Oaklands

In late June 1935, the Holy Name parade was held at De La Salle “Oaklands” (Toronto), and the “Oaklands” cadets were a featured appearance at this event.
