Historic Baltimore District 257 Brothers at Ocean Rest with Busy ScheduleIn three separate groups of retreats, 257 Brothers of the Baltimore District spent eight days at Ocean Rest in Ocean City, NJ, during their annual retreat. The retreat schedule in those days was crammed with activity at every turn.
(Bulletin of the St. La Salle Auxiliary, Ammendale, September 1935, p. 5). Film Library Established in Scranton, PANo specific month is given, but a film library was established around this time at St. Thomas College in Scranton, PA. The college thus became a central source for schools in northeastern Pennsylvania for educational motion picture films. The films which have been collected as of this writing deal with: high school biology, health education, physics classes, and hospital nurses' training classes. St. Thomas College later changed its name to the familiar-sounding University of Scranton. (Bulletin of the St. La Salle Auxiliary, Ammendale, September 1935, p. 14).
Historic New York District 9/750 New York Students Top Rating in RegentsIn August, the New York State Department of Education made public the names of the 750 high school grads whose top rating in the Regents' exams entitled them to a college scholarship. Graduates from high schools taught by the Christian Brothers have 9 of these scholarships. (St. La Salle Auxiliary Bulletin, Barrytown, September 1935, p. 2) Brother Cantidius Thomas 50th AnniversaryOn August 10, a large assembly celebrated the 50th anniversary of Brother Cantidius Thomas at Manhattan College. A true giant, Brother Thomas is remembered as an active Director of St. Joe's in Buffalo (the builder of a new school structure there), followed by his deanship of the Engineering School at Manhattan and later as its President; he was responsible in many ways for the current campus which Manhattan enjoys today. Brother Thomas then held the role of Provincial of the New York District. (St. La Salle Auxiliary Bulletin, Barrytown, September 1935, p. 8) Junior Novices Enjoy the City — Giants Beat ChicagoThe highlight of the vacation of the New York District's Junior Novices was the "never-to-be-forgotten trip to New York" due to the generosity of Brother Visitor. On their first day in the big city, the Junior Novices were the guests of the secretary of the New York Giants baseball team, where the young men witnessed the home team defeat the Chicago Cubs. After the game, the New York Junior Novices went to their family homes, while the others stayed at Manhattan College, where they saw more sites of New York in the days which followed. (St. La Salle Auxiliary Bulletin, Barrytown, September 1935, p. 16) Historic Toronto District Summer Activities at St. John's IndustrialThe students of St. John's Industrial School in East Toronto were given a number of summer activities, and a public demonstration of these was given on August 30 to an audience of admiring friends, in the form of a community concert. Vocal and instrumental numbers were performed, plus school choruses, Danish and dumbbell drills, harmonica and xylophone selections, sword drills, Indian clubs, setting up exercises, group games, and—the crowd favorite—tumbling. (The St. De La Salle Auxiliary, Aurora, Ontario, September 1935, p. 70) Every Camper is a SwimmerThe De La Salle Camp in Jackson Point, Ontario, enjoyed another banner summer. The most salient program at this camp for youngsters is swimming. "Every Camper is a Swimmer" is the De La Salle Camp slogan. Another keen attraction is the weekly boxing tournament. (The St. De La Salle Auxiliary, Aurora, Ontario, September 1935, p. 71) 12 Brothers Leave for RetreatOn August 12 the Brothers of the Toronto area left for the District Retreat in Aurora, Ontario (Annals of the Christian Brothers in the Toronto Area, p. 178). |
