Brother Celebrates 50th AnniversaryOn July 2, Brother Genebern Thomas (Kennelly) celebrated his 50th anniversary as a Brother at Ammendale. (Bulletin of the St. La Salle Auxiliary, Ammendale, September 1935, p. 7).
Bishop Celebrates 50th AnniversaryBishop Philip McDevitt, Bishop of Harrisburg, celebrated the 50th anniversary of his priesthood on July 14. Bishop McDevitt was very much a “Brothers’ Boy” from Philadelphia, attending St. Michael’s Parish School and graduating from La Salle College (1877). He is a presumed alumnus of La Salle College High School as well, because the lines of distinction between high school and collegiate classes in those days was often blurred. A strong advocate for Catholic education, he served as the Bishop of Harrisburg from 1916 until his death in late 1935. Two high schools (Harrisburg and Wyncote, PA) bear his name. (Bulletin of the St. La Salle Auxiliary, Ammendale, September 1935, p. 8).
Governor Receives Honorary Degree at La SalleGovernor George Earle of Pennsylvania was one of three recipients of an Honorary Degree at the 72nd Commencement of La Salle College on June 6. Brother Edwin Anselm (President) and Cardinal Dennis Dougherty presided over the bestowal of 60 undergraduate degrees. Alumnus U.S. Representative J. Burrwood Daly gave the main address. (St. De La Salle Auxiliary, Aurora, Ontario, September 1935, p. 63).

Institute Articles for Manhattan College...in FrenchInteresting reading—with a caveat—can be found in the July 1935 issue of the Institute Bulletin (international magazine). This publication devoted six pages of coverage regarding the academic requirements and standards of Manhattan College. Unfortunately for many (possibly most) Lasallians in the U.S. today, the articles in the Bulletin in those days were written entirely in the French language. The article is entitled “Les Etudes des Freres dans le District de New York,” and includes two photographs, namely the façade of Manhattan’s oldest building and also De La Salle College in Washington, D.C. (Bulletin des Ecoles Chretiennes, July 1935, pp. 267-272).
82nd Commencent at Manhattan CollegeManhattan College conducted its 82nd Commencement in June. Brother Patrick (President) and Cardinal Hayes (Class of 1888) presided over the granting of 229 degrees. Three persons received Honorary Degrees, and Lieutenant Governor Robert Quinn of Rhode Island delivered the principal address. (The St. De La Salle Auxiliary, Aurora, Ontario, September 1935, p. 63).
Send Out SimonOn July 19, the New York District lost its brilliant recruiter for twenty years' duration, Brother Simon. Whenever the Brothers in the District sensed the need to inspire more religious vocations in their various ministries, the international call for help—"SOS"—meant, to the Brothers, "Send Out Simon." (The St. La Salle Auxiliary Bulletin, Barrytown, September 1935, p. 12) Historic Toronto District
Brother Simon of Jesus PassesThe Toronto District lost a veritable giant with the passing of Brother Simon of Jesus in July. After teaching at St. Patrick’s School (Toronto), Brother Simon served as the Director of Lasallian schools in Hamilton and in Renfrew, Ontario. He was known as an effective recruiter and vocation director, and the number of vocations which came from the Renfrew area alone was attributable to his influence and virtue. Brother Simon was later transferred to the New York District where he similarly worked for numerous vocations. (The St. De La Salle Auxiliary, Aurora, Ontario, September 1935, p. 63).
Junior Novices VacationThe Junior Novices of the District of Toronto were given a change in their summer vacation schedule in 1935. They spent the month of July at the De La Salle Island in Lake Simcoe (Ontario), where the weather ad the organized sports program yielded a very successful summer for all concerned. (The St. De La Salle Auxiliary, Aurora, Ontario, September 1935, p. 67).
Students Brothers at OaklandsDuring the summer months, a number of student Brothers resided at De La Salle Oaklands and attended Toronto University. Brother S. Alfred, the Director, was in good health this summer and he was absent. (Annals of De La Salle Oaklands, p. 46).
Dominion Day CelebratedThe Canadian national holiday, Dominion Day, was celebrated on July 1 with good weather for the boys’ Field Day at St. John’s Training School (Annals of St. John’s Industrial School, p. 156).
Brother Serves as BursarOn June 28, Brother Tatian Edward received an obedience to go to De La Salle “Oaklands” to serve as the bursar of the Community and the school, because the financial situation of the institution needed reorganization. Brother Edward ably carried out his duties. (Annals of the Christian Brothers of the Toronto Area, p. 178)
