Progress on the new campus of La Salle College High School in suburban Wyndmoor has been slowed by inclement weather, but the opening is still scheduled for September.

What? No Bus?
West Catholic’s band marched in Philadelphia’s annual St. Patrick’s Day parade. The band of Central Catholic (Pittsburgh) was scheduled to march in Pittsburgh’s St. Patrick’s Day parade but, unfortunately, someone forgot to order the bus and they never appeared!

Therapy Needed
Group therapy sections are inaugurated by a psychiatrist at St. Francis Vocational School (Eddington, PA); the prefects there meet weekly with Brother Elrick Austin (Dondero) to discuss results of all psychological tests given.

Elkins Park House Expansion
Construction is expected to begin in May for a second building on the property of the Christian Brothers’ House of Studies in Elkins Park (PA). The building is being referred to as St. Joseph’s Hall.

Brother's Book Sells Out
A book written by Brother Francis Patrick (Coogan), As Stars For All Eternity, has been completely sold out, and Bruce Publishing Co. is issuing a second edition. The book contains 52 meditations for teachers.

Improvements at St. Gabriel's Hall
New features at the Philadelphia Protectory for Boys (now St. Gabriel’s Hall) include the installation of facilities for a registered nurse, the inauguration of weekend visits for boys who merit this privilege, and approval for an outdoor swimming pool.

Baltimore Shrine Dedication
The shrine in the sacristy of Baltimore’s magnificent new Cathedral is dedicated to St. John Baptist de La Salle. When asked as to the reason for this tribute, Archbishop Francis Keough replied, "The Brothers of the Christian Schools have had a most prominent place in the history of the Archdiocese of Baltimore. It was with this thought in mind that I directed our architects to incorporate the iconography of the new Cathedral a memorial which would commemorate their work."

A publication entitled West Point announces that St. John’s College HS (Washington) has the largest number of graduates from one school in the Corps...a total of sixteen.

Brothers to Teach in Brooklyn
The Bishop of Brooklyn announced that five new Catholic high schools would be built in the Diocese, and the first of these will be Mater Christi. Construction will begin in March, completion set for September 1961, at which time the freshman classes will begin; the Brothers will teach the boys and the Sisters of Mercy will instruct the girls.

Brother Aurelian Thomas receives honorable mention in Arthur Sheehan’s new biography of Peter Maurin (the early associate of Dorothy Day) for providing documentation on Peter’s early years as a Christian Brother.

At the Cardinal Hayes Track Meet, an all-Ethiopian relay team wearing the colors of St. Gabriel’s was just nosed by a Kenyan team from St. Thomas the Apostle for first place medals.

NY Yankees Manager "Teaches"
Casey Stengel, manager of the NY Yankees, paid a visit to Bishop Bradley HS (Manchester, NH) recently and had a meeting with the school’s championship baseball team. Then he assumed his role as "the Ole Perfesser" and taught English to one of the Senior classes.

Auxillary Bishop of Boston Compliments Brothers
Bishop Thomas Riley, the newly consecrated Auxiliary Bishop of Boston, complimented the work of the Brothers at a Knights of Columbus banquet. Although Bishop Riley did not attend St. Mary’s HS (Waltham, MA), he did have the Brothers while they taught in the parish elementary school there.

Bishop of Providence
"Brother Aurelian Thomas is happy that his classmate at La Salle [Providence], Msgr. Thomas Maloney, has been named Auxiliary Bishop of Providence." Another former student of the same school is the current Bishop of Providence, Bishop Russell McVinney.

Bishop Loughlin HS Scholarship Record
From Bishop Loughlin HS, 52 students won Regents Scholarships and 39 were designated as Alternates. These, plus other scholarships, enabled Bishop Loughlin to have the largest number of scholarships won by any Catholic high school in New York State that year.

Bishop Loughlin HS = Notre Dame Track
The Bishop Loughlin HS track team, after a very successful 1958-1959 year, is continuing its drive to return the school to its prestige of the 1940s, when Life magazine referred to Loughlin as "the Notre Dame of high school track."

Bishop Bradley HS (Manchester, NH) was the only Catholic school in New Hampshire chosen to participate in the nationwide "Project Talent," a two-day battery of tests designed for a long-range follow-up on available U.S. talent.

One military school visited the campus of another when the 75 members of the cadet band of St. John’s College HS (Washington) gave a lively music concert at La Salle Military Academy (Oakdale, Long Island); "Marche Lorraine" and "76 Trombones" were among the featured pieces.

Brother Amelian Bernard and Cormac Richard have been appointed to the Committee for the Improvement of English Instruction in New Hampshire, a group of eight individuals.

New York #2 in Total US Brothers
Of all the USA Districts, New York ranks second in the total number of Brothers (574); the St. Louis District has 584. New York is also second in the total number of pupils taught (14, 217), while St. Louis has 16,228.

The New York District lost three distinguished members during February 1960: scholarly Brother Alphonsus Fidelis, diligent Brother Cletus of Mary, and successful prefect Brother Boniface of Mary.

Fourth Superior Diploma
Brother Bernardine of Jesus attained his fourth Superior Diploma in the Institute Religion Examinations. He is the fifth New York Brother to achieve this distinction, joining Brothers Cecilian of Mary (1950), Bertrand Leo (1954), Albian Victor (1955) and Albinus of Mary (1958).

Jehova Witness, Meet Catholicism
Brother Christian Kevin of St. Thomas the Apostle School (Harlem) was approached by a Jehovah Witness recently. After a half-hour conversation, however, the Witness left with a catechism and two Catholic magazines...plus a promise to see a priest!

60 Years as a Brother
The big event at De La Salle College (Washington, DC) on March 20 was the Diamond Anniversary of "The Dean," Brother Azades Gabriel, who celebrated 60 years as a Brother and who taught so many of the Brothers of the New York and LI-NE Districts. After Mass and Benediction, the dinner alone lasted three hours, complete with speeches meaningful to diverse generations of Brothers.

Bishop Loughlin HS Scholarship Honors
Special congratulations are extended to Brother Basil Stephen and to the faculty and boys of Bishop Loughlin HS on their success in the recent New York State Scholarship Examinations. 52 students won full scholarships and 39 received alternate scholarships, plus a score of other scholarships and honors.

American Congress on Surveying and Mapping
Brother Benjamin Austin (Civil Engineering, Manhattan College) was installed as the new Vice President of the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping. Brother Austin is an authority in this field; for the past six years he chaired the task committee on the status of surveying and mapping in the US.

Debaters from St. Patrick’s HS (Newburgh, NY), moderated by Brother A. Leonard, toured the State Capitol (Albany) with their local Assemblyman and witnessed the New York Assembly and Senate in session. The highlight was when each boy met the Governor of New York.

The first place trophy in the B Division, won by the track team of CBA (Lincroft) at the Christian Brothers’ Track Meet in New York City, was bigger news in the Lincroft area than the Winter Olympics (Squaw Valley, CA).

There has been so much snow in Detroit this winter and early spring that one eager golfer has set up a driving range in the gymnasium of De La Salle Collegiate with the help of a surplus parachute.

The paper recycling drive sponsored by the Dads’ Club of St. Joseph’s HS (Detroit) was so successful that Brother Bernard George (moderator) watched helplessly as the trailer sank deeper into the thin asphalt of the school yard.

Former Visitor General Appointed Postulator...
"Our confreres north of the border have begun in earnest in promote the beatification of Brother Theophanius Leo by the appointment of a Postulator... Those Brothers who were Juniors, Novices or Scholastics in Pocantico Hills [NY] in the '20s will remember Brother Theophanius Leo as Visitor General during those years."
...Was Also Master of Novices
In addition to the post of Visitor General, Brother Leo also served as a Master of Novices in French-speaking Canada.
