Brothers' Friend Passes AwayA great friend and benefactor of the Christian Brothers, Dr. Joseph P. Burke, passed away on December 14, 1934. Taught by the Brothers in Buffalo at both St. Bridget's Parish School and St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute (Class of 1890), he graduated from Manhattan College and distinguished himself in the field of pathology, notably cancer. The Brothers affiliated him in 1922. As of 1935, two of his sons graduated from Manhattan and two other sons are students at St. Joseph's (Buffalo). (Bulletin of the St. La Salle Auxiliary, Barrytown, March 1935, p. 34)
St. Joseph's Commercial College (Detroit)Two full pages of attention were given to St. Joseph's Commercial College (Detroit) in the March 1935 issue of the Bulletin of the St. La Salle Auxiliary. The Christian Brothers initially came to Detroit in 1851, opening a school in SS. Peter and Paul Parish and subsequently schools in four other parishes. In 1864, however, the Civil War compelled these schools to close except for St. Mary's School, where the Brothers labored until 1877, when they transferred their activities to the neighboring St. Joseph's Parish and its school (Orleans and Jay Streets). Reflecting the growing need for commercial education, the parish erected a new building to facilitate a commercial college which began in December 1889. St. Joseph's experienced growth in succeeding years because of a large addition to the building, a total remodeling of the original structure, the introduction of academic studies to the curriculum, and intramural and interscholastic athletics. (Bulletin of the St. La Salle Auxiliary, Barrytown, March 1935, pp. 37-38 and also June 1935, pp. 53-54.

Monastery Shooting TragedyIn March 1935, the faculty and students of St. Joseph's College (Yorkton, Saskatchewan) were disturbed by the shooting tragedy at the Monastery of the Redemptorists next door. Father Delforge was instantly killed by a crazed man from the Goodeve district. Father Bala, the superior, was seriously wounded. (Submitted by Brother Walter Farrell)
