January 30, 2010: UPDATE from Brother Robert Schieler - General Counselor for US/Toronto Region

The Brothers in Haiti are most grateful for the financial support and prayers they are receiving from all over the Lasallian world. The Institute's plan to assist Haiti consists of two components. First is collecting monies for immediate needs of the people—food, water, shelter and medicine.
Second is the building of a teacher-training center, combined with an elementary school and a dispensary. A property near the airport in Port-au-Prince has been purchased for the new education center which will be headed by the District of South Mexico-Antilles, the District to which Haiti belongs. The Institute will also extend assistance to local religious congregations in Haiti who have lost almost everything in this tragedy, including members of their orders and most of their structural properties.

January 15, 2010: UPDATE from Brother Robert Schieler - General Counselor for US/Toronto Region

Our school outside Port-au-Prince suffered only minor damage and none of the Brothers were injured, and in the captial our four novices and two staff are okay. RELAL (Region Latinoamericana Lasallista) is comtemplating a two phase approach to the crisis, first by helping in any way possible to address the immediate emergency. The second phase is to establish a school for young people who may have become orphans because of the earthquake, and for others who now no longer have a school to go to. This second phase is in preliminary stage of discussion.

Information from CRS

As you are well aware, our brothers and sisters in Haiti are in tremendous need of our prayers and gestures of solidarity.

NCEA’s Secondary Schools Department’s partners, Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and Education for Justice (EFJ), have prepared prayer services and resources to assist Catholic high schools in responding to these tragic events. On behalf of CRS and EFJ, we have permission to share them with our member schools. For additional resources and information about ways to show support, please visit http://www.crs.org/ and www.educationforjustice.org.

CRS has permanent offices and ongoing projects in Haiti, which is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Eighty percent of Haitians are Catholic. CRS is currently mobilizing emergency relief supplies including: kitchen kits, hygiene kits, mosquito nets, bedding, water containers and other lifesaving assistance. Additionally, Cardinal George, President of the USCCB and Archbishop Dolan, chair of the CRS board, have offered a statement encouraging parishes to take up a special collection for the humanitarian efforts of CRS in Haiti.

On behalf of the Association, we invite you to share these resources with the appropriate individuals in your school community. Thank you for joining us in prayer and standing in solidarity with all those affected by this disaster.
