Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies

St. Mary's CollegeButtimer Institute is an intensive Lasallian formation and education program that studies the life and work of St. John Baptist de La Salle and the origins of the Lasallian educational mission. Through an examination of the writings of De La Salle and an analysis of some modern educators, the participants develop a deeper understanding of the Lasallian heritage and its influence on contemporary education.


Course of Studies

Buttimer Institute is a three-year program, conducted in two-week
durations during the summer.

  • Year One: The Founding Story
  • Year Two: De La Salle’s Educational Vision
  • Year Three: De La Salle’s Spiritual Vision

The Practicum

Participants are asked to enroll in a co-curricular activity that addresses the needs of Lasallian associates, scholars, formators & accompaniers, presenters and young Lasallians. The Practicum will provide skills and ideas for strengthening the Lasallian mission in one’s own ministry. Participants will remain in the Practicum they have selected for each of the three years of Buttimer, and will be asked to select one Practicum from among the following:

  • Lasallian Mission Coordinators/Animators
  • Lasallian Presentation Resources
  • Lasallian Research
  • Young Lasallians
  • Lasallian Associations
