About the School
Meki Catholic Mission School is located in the town of Meki, 135 kms. southeast of Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. It has a population of about 46,000. Most of the people live below the poverty level and earn less than a dollar a day. The school is owned by the Vicariate of Meki Catholic Church and administered by the Brothers of the Christian Schools since 1989. It is the only senior high school in an area of more than 200, 000 people. At present the school has 1,385 students from grades 1 through 12 (P2). More than 85 percent of the students who sat for the National Exams have been accepted to the National University.
The small tuition of 10 to 20 Birr per month (between $1.25 to $2.50) covers about 14 percent of the school’s expenses. The Vicariate subsidizes the school for salaries of lay teachers, electric bills and upkeep of the building. The school provides food for a number of students who come to class with empty stomachs.
