With its victory on Saturday, February 6th at the University at Buffalo, the St. Joe’s team advances to the New York State competition on March 19-20 at the United States Military Academy in West Point, NY. (Check back here for the State Competition Update!)

The St. Joe’s team – seniors Mike Johnson, Nick Eadie, Alex Elhage, Tom Evangelista, and Jake Roberts; juniors Jon Binns, Kevin Gibas, Mitch Kopacz, Zach Lomas, and Mike Patterson; and sophomore Eric Bellanca – placed 21 points ahead of 30 teams at the event. Each school elects to participate in 18 events, all of which fall into one of four primary scientific disciplines: Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Earth Sciences, and Engineering and Technical Services. St. Joe’s medaled in 15 of the 18 that its students entered.

New York State Science Olympiad (NYSSO) is a non-profit organization dedicated to: improving the quality of science education in grades 5-12, increasing male, female, and minority interest in science, creating a technologically literate workforce, and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science and technology. These goals are achieved by providing opportunities for teams of students to participate in 22 regional and state Science Olympiad tournaments across New York State.
