“To accomplish great things we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan but also believe.”
Anatole France (Lasallian Reflection 5: Great Things Are Possible)

Lasallians around the globe are invited to participate in a 9 day Lasallian Novena for Pentecost: Prayed in Hope that Great Things Are Possible.

A Novena is a form of Catholic prayer that you can do over 9 days.

To pray a Novena, recite a specific prayer or series of prayers with an intention in mind. The prayers for this Novena are all related to preparing for the great Feast of Pentecost, the birthday of the Church. The format for this Novena is purposely simple. As you pray this Novena, make it your own, for example, you may want to add a prayer such as the Hail Mary or Our Father to conclude the daily Novena prayer. All are welcome to participate in this Novena. This Novena leading up to Pentecost is inspired by The Meditations of Saint John Baptist de La Salle and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, the “Director” and Queen of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.

NOVENA PROCESS

  • Place yourself in a comfortable setting away from distraction. Optional: Light a candle, play soft meditative music, or use a prayer bowl.
  • Pause. Take several, deep, cleansing breaths. Remember that you are in the Holy Presence of God.
  • Read the daily prayer several times, silently or aloud. Breathe deeply. Pause between each reading. Allow the words to resonate in your spirit.
  • Consider this: How are the words resonating within you? If the words were to live in your heart, enliven your soul, and nourish your spirit, what do you need to affirm or change in your life?
  • Conclude by giving gratitude for this time knowing that you are “together and by association” in prayer with members of the Lasallian family. Live Jesus in our hearts…forever.

NOVENA DAY 1

Dedication of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools to Notre Dame de Liesse (Our Lady of Joy)

“The day after Trinity Sunday, 1686, when De La Salle and the Brothers took their first vows, they made a pilgrimage to Liesse, walking all through the night, and again pronounced vows at the foot of the statue of Our Lady of Joy. Saint John Baptist de La Salle made Our Lady the “Superior” of his young Institute. I want Mary to be the Director and Queen of our schools.” (Footsteps of the Founder)

Novena Prayer

Our Lady of Joy, we dedicate our prayer, this novena of hope and dreaming to you as our Blessed Mother. A mother always has great hope for her children and believes in their dreams. I share my hopes and dreams with you now in silent prayer and with gratitude.

Novena Thought

What is my intention for this Novena?

NOVENA DAY 2
Saint Ann (Mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary)

“By her diligent prayer, she merited to bring into the world the Most Blessed Virgin, Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us admire the great honor God paid her by choosing her to be the mother of so holy and distinguished a daughter and thereby to become the first person to take part in the great mystery of the Incarnation.”  (MED 146.2)

Novena Prayer

Saint Ann, through your example of fervent prayer you dedicated yourself to the will of God in your life. Through prayer, you participated in the ongoing act of salvation history and became part of the plan by which our redemption was made possible. I pray now, that my prayers may be aligned with the will of God in my life as to give honor to God’s dreams for me.

Novena Thought

What do I ponder are God’s dreams for me?

NOVENA DAY 3
The Blessed Virgin Mary

It is impossible for us to believe how great was the cooperation of the Most Blessed Virgin with all the graces she received from God at the moment of her birth. By a special privilege, she already enjoyed the use of reason and made use of it to adore God and to thank him for all his goodness. As she looked at herself and contemplated God in herself, she was altogether amazed to see the generosity of God in his creature. (MED 163.3)

Novena Prayer

Loving Mother of all, I pray that my heart may be open to receive the generosity of God. I pray for the grace to cooperate with God’s unfolding plan for my life. May I never cease to be amazed by the generosity of grace and the Holy Spirit.

Novena Thought

In this moment to what is God calling me to reflect upon in my life?

NOVENA DAY 4
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin

“The Most Blessed Virgin, filled with the love of God throughout her life.” (MED 156.1)

Novena Prayer

Most Blessed Virgin Mary, I pray that I may be given the grace to be open to the love of God in my life. May I allow myself to be filled with the promptings of the Holy Spirit in my life. May the winds of Pentecost blow free in my heart and free me from any doubt of God’s eternal love for me.

Novena Thought

What do I need to detach from so I may open my heart and allow the cleansing winds of the Holy Spirit to blow free in me?

NOVENA DAY 5
Through Blessed Virgin Mary’s intercession pray that you may become a holy temple for God.

“Honor the Most Blessed Virgin today as the tabernacle and the living temple that God built, adorned by God’s own hands. Pray to her to obtain for you from God the grace that your soul may be so well adorned and so well disposed to receive the word of God and to communicate it to others that you may become through her intercession a tabernacle of the divine Word.” (MED 191.3)

Novena Prayer

Most holy Blessed Virgin Mary, receive my prayer that I too may be a living tabernacle of the divine Word. May your son, Jesus, the Word of God, live in my heart…forever.

Novena Thought

How does the living Word of God influence my life choices?

NOVENA DAY 6

In today’s Gospel Jesus Christ points out to us three dispositions we need to receive the Holy Spirit, which he expresses in these words: If you love me, keep my commandments, and I will ask my Father, and he will give you another Consoler to be with you always. (MED 42.1)

Novena Prayer

Mother of God, by your example of dedication to the will you uttered the divine “yes” in response to an angel’s question to you. May, I grow in my love of God so that I am open to His will for me in my life’s choices.

Novena Thought

Each day renew your offering to God. (DLS Letter 32)

Novena Prayer

Faithful Mother, you stood at the foot of the cross and witnessed the death of your son and yet you never doubted that God would transform death. In these days of suffering, separation and loss may I have a deep and abiding trust that God will provide for me the grace I need to endure my trails and challenges.

As we have prepared our hearts to celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit may we be filled with faith and zeal to live the promptings we have received guided by the abundant grace of God.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among woman and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Novena Thought

As you began this Novena you were asked to consider your intention for this time of prayer. What has your prayer experience been?
