Tercentenary Celebration of the Death of De La Salle and the Year of Lasallian Vocations

About the 300th Year

During 2019, the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and the Lasallian Family will celebrate the 300th anniversary of the death of their founder, Saint John Baptist de La Salle, Patron Saint of Teachers. The Institute has designated 2019 as the Year of Lasallian Vocations. Throughout Italy and around the world, events and celebrations are being planned to honor our common heritage of providing a human and Christian education to the young and the poor and to promote the vocation of the educational ministry.

FEAST OF SAINT JOHN BAPTIST DE LA SALLE
15 May 2018 – Letter from the Superior General

Dear Brothers, Partners, Students and all members of the Lasallian Family,

In anticipation of the 2019 Year of Lasallian Vocations, we have been “accompanying” – through social media and official communications – de La Salle during the final five years of his life. During the last two years of his life, he worked on completing the Explanation of the Method of Interior Prayer, revised The Rule and the Conduct of Schools, served as chaplain at St. Yon, continued his extensive letter writing and bolstered the authority of Brother Superior Barthelemy. His final years were characterized by generativity; that is, a practical fraternal concern for the next generation of Brothers.

I have witnessed a similar spirit of generativity in many Brothers and Partners throughout the Institute, and most recently during my pastoral visit to Europe and the Mediterranean (RELEM). Many senior Brothers and Partners remain active in the mission and Brothers and Partners in the prime of life are energetically devising contemporary pedagogies based on Lasallian principals… MORE >

Jubilee Year Announced, Declared by the Holy See
15 May 2018 – Letter from the Superior General

Dear Brothers, Partners, Students and all members of the Lasallian Family,

I am very pleased to inform you that the Holy See has declared 2019 a Jubilee Year* in honor the 300th anniversary of the death of Saint John Baptist de La Salle.

The Jubilee Year will begin on 17 November 2018, when we recall the dedication of the sanctuary of Saint John Baptist de La Salle at the Generalate in Rome. The Jubilee Year will conclude on 31 December 2019, the end of the Tercentenary and Year of Lasallian Vocations.

A Jubilee Year offers the opportunity to express our faith through concrete actions in favor of those most in need. I invite all of you to celebrate the jubilee through practical acts of kindness and service to young people yearning for mercy and compassion. MORE >

A Message from Brother Gustavo Ramírez B., FSC, Coordinator of Tercentenary Events
November 2017

It is an honor and a great pleasure to present to you this video recorded by Brother Superior. The video is an update to the Institute and the entire Lasallian Family of events related to “the 300 anniversary of our Holy Founder´s completion of his earthly journey.” In his presentation, Brother Superior calls our attention to:

The mottoOne heart, one commitment, one life.
The focus“To deepen our motivations as Lasallians and intensify our service to the poor and vulnerable.”
The goal: To manifest our global unity and to “strengthen us to work for the betterment of humankind.”

Brother Superior encourages the creativity of Districts and invites them to create their own activities and to share them with the whole Institute. The Institute´s Communications Service will facilitate the sharing of materials. Brother Superior emphasizes that this anniversary is an opportunity to promote all Lasallian vocations and, in a special way, to support young men discerning a call to the life of the Brothers. May this anniversary be an opportunity to increase the viability and vitality of the Lasallian mission of human and Christian education, so that “we may continue live our legacy for another 300 years”.

New Music Video and Lyrics for #300LaSalle

by Jorge Roig – Antoni Bosh

Refrain – One Heart, One Commitment, One Life

Full lyrics – One Heart, One Commitment, One Life

Pope Francis once said:

“We are pilgrims from death to fullness of life …”

With this understanding, the theme of the tercentenary, One Heart, One Commitment, One Life represents the fullness of De La Salle’s life and the continued vitality of the Lasallian Mission and vocation in 80 countries around the world. “You can perform miracles in regard both yourselves and your work…by an entire fidelity to grace, not letting any movement of grace go by without corresponding with it; and by touching the hearts of children entrusted to your care…” (J.B. De La Salle, Meditation 180.3)
