Why We Joined the Brothers

Living in community with the Brothers was the most helpful aspect of my discernment. Even though I wasn’t working in the school with the Brothers at the time.

What was most helpful during my discernment was the opportunity to live in community with the Brothers and to work in their schools.

The Brothers are a Catholic religious community founded by Saint John Baptist de La Salle and dedicated to the mission of Christian education. Rooted in prayer, community, and service, they live as “ambassadors and ministers of Jesus Christ,” bringing the hope of the Gospel to the world of education — especially to the young and the poor.

Saint John Baptist de La Salle never planned to found a religious community — but God gradually led him there. Inspired by the needs of the poor and moved with deep faith, he gathered teachers into community and helped form them to serve through education. What began in his home became a worldwide mission of consecrated Brothers working “together and by association” for the good of young people.

Today, the Brothers continue De La Salle’s mission in over 80 countries, serving more than a million students each day. They accompany young people in faith, education, and life, modeling God’s love and presence. Through teaching, mentoring, and ministry, they continue to bring the Gospel to the classroom, to communities, and to the hearts of the students they serve.

What was most helpful during your discernment?

Living in community with the Brothers was the most helpful aspect of my discernment. Even though I wasn’t working in the school with the Brothers at the time, I gained firsthand exposure to community life and a shared prayer life, both of which are critical to the Brothers’ vocation. Through sharing in the Brothers’ community, I found their joy in their vocation to be both tangible and inspiring, which ultimately led me to follow God’s promptings to apply the Brothers.

Witnessing the profound joy the Brothers had for their vocation—including their ministry, community life , and prayer life—inspired me to apply. I often say I applied for “selfish” reasons because I desired that same joy in my own life. I realized then that the Brothers are ordinary men who choose to do something extraordinary with their lives.

What brings me joy as a Brother is seeing God every day, both in my classroom and in my community. Each day, I encounter God in my students and in the relationships I’m able to form with them. I also see God in my Brothers in community through the generosity, support, and care we share for one another.

What was most helpful during your discernment?

What was most helpful during my discernment was the opportunity to live in community with the Brothers and to work in their schools. Being immersed in their daily life allowed me to witness their commitment to prayer, fraternity, and mission. It gave me a deeper understanding of their vocation—not just in theory, but in practice.  That experience helped me to see where my own gifts could serve and where I felt most at home.

What ultimately led me to take the step to apply to the Brothers was having meaningful conversations with them about their life as religious Brothers, and volunteering in one of their schools before applying. Those experiences helped me see their vocation lived out in real and inspiring ways and gave me the clarity and confidence to move forward.

What brings me joy as a Brother is the opportunity to walk with young people in their journey—first as a teacher and now as a school counselor. Both roles have allowed me to help, guide, and form students to be good Christians and responsible citizens. There’s a deep joy in seeing them grow, and the blessing of meeting new students each year continues to renew my sense of purpose and hope.

Our Charism

Founded over 300 years ago by Saint John Baptist de La Salle, Patron Saint of Teachers, the Brothers are a Catholic religious order vowed to pray, live and minister together. As “ambassadors and ministers of Jesus Christ,” the Brothers consecrate their life to God to bring the Gospel to the world of education. Our fraternity, lived out in community and educational ministry, as religious, is a prophetic sign for the Church and for our world.

“The purpose of this Institute is to provide a human and Christian education to the young, especially the poor, according to the ministry which the Church has entrusted to it.” – The Rule of the Brothers of the Christian Schools

Founding Story

As a priest from a noble family, La Salle never anticipated founding a religious order, especially one dedicated to education. Moved by the plight of the poor who seemed to be far from salvation, La Salle discerned that God was calling him through a gradual process to commit his life to the Christian Schools. He began by inviting the teachers into his home for a retreat and some basic teacher training. He then moved into a new house with the teachers and formed the community that became known as the Brothers of the Christian Schools.

Against fierce opposition from the educational establishment and certain Church leaders La Salle understood that God had led him to create a new form of religious life – a community of consecrated laymen dedicated to conduct gratuitous schools “together and by association.”

“God, who guides all things with wisdom and serenity…willed to commit me entirely to the development of the schools.” – St. John Baptist de La Salle

The Brothers Today

Throughout the world today the Brothers carry on De La Salle’s mission in over 80 countries, ministering to over 1 million students each day. The Brothers commit to being “guardian angels to the children entrusted to their care” and model for their students the love of the Father, and the relationship of the Trinity. They serve as “big brothers” to their students, helping them along their faith journey by continually bringing their students and their needs to God, and bringing God to their students. Today, Brothers serve as teachers, counselors, coaches, administrators and in a variety of other educational roles.

“The charism of the school…still appears today as one of the most beautiful and eloquent expressions of…[what we] all received in Baptism…Religious brothers make prophetically visible, through their consecration, the baptismal ministry that spurs everyone…” – Pope Leo XIV
