Dear Friends,
This month, Br. Robert Schaefer, FSC, has turned his section of Lasallian Notes over to
Br. Paul Avvento, FSC, Director of Vocation Ministry. His words are so encouraging, especially as we celebrate Founder’s Day on May 15th.
When I became Director of Vocations in July I adamantly believed in the continued relevance of our beautifully unique vocation, and that God was continuing to call men to serve Him as Brothers of the Christian Schools. After close to a year in this role, I realize my only mistake was underestimating the attractiveness of our vocation.
Through a plethora of events, visits, retreats, and gatherings, men continue to share their gratitude and appreciation for inviting them to share in our fraternity. Br. Ed Shields and I have been supported and encouraged by Brothers and Partners from across the District, helping us share our Brotherhood with hundreds of men interested in learning more about our shared identity. We have worked with men of all ages from within and outside the Lasallian world. And each time they share the ways that these experiences have impacted their faith lives and their discernment.
I have been surprised by the intensity of faith in the young people we have encountered. From witnessing our high school students lining up for Confession and Adoration to the young men praying the Rosary together on the beach, it is clear that God is at the center of their lives. These men see in us Brothers a flame so intense that it directs us outwards to the students entrusted to our care. They desire not simply to teach a subject but to lead others toward God by their example and witness. They recognize their faith as a gift freely given to them, and one that must be freely shared with others.
It will take time, but as we trust in the slow work of God we also trust in His continued care of our Institute. We believe that our faithfulness to our vocation will inspire the faithful to explore it more earnestly, and that those whom God calls to our Institute will gladly and eagerly respond with their “yes!”
Please pray through the intercession of St. Joseph – Patron of the Institute, St. La Salle, and Mary – Queen and Mother of the Christian Schools, that we Brothers continue to respond as God calls and that those whom God calls may join us in our life of faith, community, and evangelization through education.

Live Jesus in our hearts,
Br. Paul Avvento, FSC
Director of Vocation Ministry
