Greetings to each of you across our Lasallian community of Eastern North America: students, educators, families, and Brothers.
Each day offers us the opportunity to make something meaningful. It is not always through big gestures, but through how we show up, how we care, and how we live out the mission we share. In the ordinary moments of our lives, something sacred is always taking shape.
As we begin this new school year, I invite you to pause and reflect on something simple, yet significant: What does it really mean to do your best?
We live in a world that thrives on competition. We measure. We rank. We compare, often without even noticing. But that’s not the message of the Gospel. And it’s not the spirit of a Lasallian education.
Excellence, for us, isn’t about outpacing someone else. It’s a journey we take together. We’re not called to be the best. We’re called to be our best.
In his letter to the Corinthians, Saint Paul asks:
“Do you not know that in a race, all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to win.”
But Paul isn’t talking about beating others. He’s pointing us toward something deeper — to run with purpose. To run with heart. To give our full selves to the journey of becoming.
That’s the goal of Lasallian education. Not to outdo someone else, but in diligently pursuing excellence, to become who we are meant to be.
Saint John Baptist de La Salle believed this with all his heart. He told the first Brothers to treat every student as if they were a child of a king. Not to compete, but to care. Not to rank, but to raise each one up.
That’s who we are. That’s what our schools stand for.
So this year, let’s make a choice:
Let’s lift one another up, not look over our shoulders.
Let’s value progress over perfection.
Let’s help one another be faithful, generous, and of service.
Let’s build a school culture where we urge one another to do our very best, in studies, athletics, extracurricular activities – to pursue a personal record in all our endeavors.
Because we’re in this together. Students. Teachers. Staff. Families. All of us!
And as we begin again, my prayer is simple: That each of us runs our race well. With courage. With joy. With integrity.
Let’s support one another. Let’s remember we are always in the holy presence of God. And let us live Jesus in our hearts… forever.
